From your freezer to the holiday table

How much turkey should I plan for?

As a practical planning estimate, allow about 1½ lb of uncooked whole turkey per person when you want leftovers. A 14 lb bird gives roughly 9 generous portions; a 20 lb bird gives roughly 13. Appetites, sides and the final bird weight affect portions. The 14–20 lb range is approximate; an exact weight is not guaranteed.

When should I start thawing?

Thaw in the original wrapper on a tray in a refrigerator at 40°F or below. Allow about 3–4 days for 14–16 lb or 4–5 days for 16–20 lb. Once refrigerator-thawed, cook within 1–2 days. Never thaw on the counter.

Short on time? Keep the turkey sealed in a leakproof bag, fully submerged in cold tap water. Change the water every 30 minutes; allow about 30 minutes per pound and cook immediately after thawing. For this size, that can mean 7–10 hours of attended thawing.

How should I store it when it arrives?

Unpack promptly and check its condition. Store frozen at 0°F or below until ready to thaw, or begin safe refrigerator thawing. If the shipment arrives warm or damaged, take photos and contact info@halalworlddepot.com with your order number before preparing it.

A SIMPLE HOLIDAY RECIPE

Garlic & herb roast turkey

Golden skin, fragrant herbs and familiar ingredients. This suggested recipe is for one fully thawed, unstuffed 14–20 lb turkey.

Prep: about 25 minutes   ·   Oven: 325°F   ·   Rest: 20–30 minutes

Gather your ingredients

  • 1 fully thawed HWD whole turkey, giblets and neck removed
  • ½ cup softened unsalted butter, or ⅓ cup olive oil
  • 6 garlic cloves, finely minced
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh rosemary and 2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper and 2 teaspoons paprika
  • 2 teaspoons fine salt for an unseasoned bird; reduce or omit if the package says salted, enhanced or pre-brined
  • 1 onion and 1 lemon, cut into wedges, for the roasting pan
  • 2 cups low-sodium halal chicken broth or water

Roast with confidence

  1. Prepare. Heat the oven to 325°F. Remove any packaging, neck and giblets. Pat the thawed turkey dry with paper towels; do not rinse raw poultry. Wash hands and clean utensils and surfaces after handling it.
  2. Season. Combine butter or oil, garlic, herbs, pepper, paprika and salt. Gently loosen the breast skin and spread some mixture underneath; rub the rest over the outside.
  3. Set up the pan. Put the turkey breast-side up on a rack in a roasting pan. Place onion and lemon in the pan and pour in broth or water. Leave the cavity unstuffed; cook stuffing separately.
  4. Roast. Plan roughly 3¾–4¼ hours for a 14–18 lb bird, or 4¼–4½ hours for an 18–20 lb bird. These are estimates, not a doneness test. Start checking early; loosely tent the breast with foil if it browns too quickly.
  5. Check the temperature. Use a food thermometer. The thickest breast and the innermost thigh and wing must each reach at least 165°F, without the probe touching bone. Do not rely on color, clear juices or a pop-up timer alone.
  6. Rest and carve. Rest for 20–30 minutes before carving. Refrigerate leftovers in shallow containers within 2 hours, or within 1 hour above 90°F. Use refrigerated leftovers within 3–4 days; reheat to 165°F.
